You could even use a symbol. A star and like wise. Lots of symbols do not imply any offensive message.

Really good article - thank you.

Laura - instead of having 'plus size', why not use a letter?

As a retailer of clothing for above average sized girls ages 5-12, I couldn't agree with you more regarding the constant bombardment of negative commentary regarding body size that's perpetuated by much of the mainstream media. And unfortunately most people (especially girls and young women) would definitely prefer to be considered radically thin vs. "overweight" even if that constitutes being a size 12, 14 or 16.
Do you have an alternative term that you'd replace "plus size" with? I have to admit to using it, but only because I haven't been able to come up with anything that's any more neutral, respectful or empowering. It seems almost every other term I can think of is even more demeaning, insulting, or not easily understood. Since our mission at RealKidz Inc. is to promote healthy body image, self-esteem and self-confidence amongst our customers, I'd love to know if you've come up with more positive terminology we could adopt.
Please feel free to contact me directly if you'd like. I'd appreciate hearing your feedback!
